IWF confirmed Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan for 2021

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Executive Board met in Las Vegas this week where it discussed the collaborative development of the IWF Strategic Plan 2020-2024, approved the host cities for the upcoming IWF events.

During the meeting, the Executive Board also embraced the IOC’s Refugee Olympic Team concept and agreed to proceed with the recognition of Refugee athlete status.

The Executive Board also confirmed the host cities of the upcoming IWF events. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia was confirmed as the host of the 2021 Junior World Championships, which will be an historic occasion as the first international event of this level held for men and women in the country. The allocation of Jeddah as the host city reflects the IWF’s commitment to gender equality and to empowering women and men all around the world, through weightlifting. Tashkent, Uzbekistan was confirmed as the host of the 2021 Youth World Championships.

With respect to Thailand’s multiple Adverse Analytical Findings and their potential consequences that seriously damage the integrity of the sport, Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association (TAWA) undertakes not to participate at any IWF events, including the Qualification Events and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. TAWA’s undertaking was acknowledged by the IWF Executive Board.

TAWA still continues to fulfil its obligation and will deliver the organisation of the 2019 IWF World Championships despite the fact that no Thai athletes will participate.

IWF President Tamas Ajan said:

“Many important decisions were taken by the IWF Executive Board during our meeting here in Las Vegas. It is fitting that just before our Youth World Championships we discussed how we can plan for the future and ensure that we are delivering the very best possible sport for our future stars. The Strategic Plan 2020-2024 will integrate feedback from all stakeholders to ensure it truly represents the interests of everyone in weightlifting. We are also excited to announce Tashkent and Jeddah as the hosts of the 2021 Youth and Junior World Championships.”
